About

Les Corts is not the Barcelona you see on the postcards. It’s not the sweat-drenched chaos of the Ramblas or the self-conscious hipness of Gràcia. It’s a neighborhood of wide avenues, business suits, and people who actually live here. And in the middle of it all sits Leku, a place that doesn't give a damn about your Instagram feed. It cares about the product.

Walking into Leku feels like stepping into a sanctuary of sanity. It’s clean, unpretentious, and focused. There are no Edison bulbs or reclaimed wood walls here to distract you from the fact that the kitchen is working at a level most 'concept' restaurants can only dream of. This is 'cuina de mercat'—market cuisine—in its purest, most honest form. If it wasn't pulled from the earth or the sea this morning, it has no business being on your plate.

You start with the croquettes. Everyone tells you to order the croquettes, and for once, the crowd isn't wrong. These aren't the leaden, floury lumps you find in the frozen section of a supermarket. These are delicate, crispy shells holding back a literal flood of liquid gold. One bite and the center—rich, creamy, and intensely flavored—gives way. It’s a technical marvel that tastes like home. It’s the kind of thing that makes you realize you’ve been settling for mediocrity your entire life.

The menu, or 'la carta,' is a living document. It breathes with the seasons. If the bolets (wild mushrooms) are popping up in the Pyrenees, they’ll be here, sautéed simply with garlic and parsley, tasting of damp earth and pine. If the Palamós prawns are hitting the docks, they’ll arrive at your table with their heads intact, full of that briny, metallic funk that separates the serious eaters from the tourists. The steak tartare is another benchmark—hand-cut, aggressively seasoned, and served without the unnecessary theater that usually ruins the dish.

Then there’s the wine. The list isn't a phone book of overpriced labels; it’s a curated selection of bottles that actually make sense with the food. There’s a deep respect for Catalan terroir here, with Priorats and Montsants that carry the weight of the sun and the dust of the vineyards. The staff knows their cellar, and they’ll steer you toward something interesting without the usual sommelier sniffiness.

Leku is the kind of place that reminds you why we travel in the first place. It’s not to see the monuments we’ve already seen a thousand times on screen. It’s to find the places where the locals go when they want to be reminded that life is good. It’s for the long, slow lunch that turns into an afternoon, fueled by gin-tonics and a shared plate of torrija—a caramelized, custardy version of French toast that should probably be illegal.

Is it perfect? No. The service can be brisk when the business lunch crowd descends, and if you’re looking for a view of the Sagrada Família, you’re in the wrong part of town. But if you want to eat food that tastes like the place it came from, prepared by people who respect the ingredients enough to stay out of their way, then get on the L3 metro and head to Les Corts. This is one of the best restaurants in Barcelona for people who actually like to eat.
