About

Poblenou used to be the 'Manchester of Catalonia,' a gritty landscape of smoking chimneys and textile mills. Today, it’s a different kind of factory—a tech-heavy barrio of glass towers and startups. Right in the middle of this evolution sits The Hoxton, Poblenou. It’s not trying to be a Gothic Quarter relic or a stuffy Eixample palace. It’s a bold, mid-century modern transplant that feels like it’s been here forever, even though it’s the new kid on the block.

Walking into the lobby, you aren’t greeted by a sterile check-in desk. You walk into a living room. This is the 'open house' philosophy the brand is famous for. You’ve got digital nomads hunched over MacBooks, locals nursing vermouth, and travelers trying to figure out where the beach is. The air smells like roasting coffee and ambition. It’s vibrant, it’s loud, and it’s unapologetically modern. If you’re looking for hushed whispers and white-glove service, you’ve come to the wrong place. This is a hotel for people who actually like people.

The rooms—categorized with refreshing honesty as Shoebox, Cosy, Roomy, and Biggy—are a masterclass in Mediterranean-industrial design. Think terracotta floors, floral headboards that look like they were swiped from a 1970s Spanish villa, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The 'Shoebox' isn't a marketing gimmick; it’s small. If you’re traveling with three suitcases and a sense of entitlement, upgrade to the 'Biggy.' But for the solo traveler or the couple who spends their time exploring the city, the smaller rooms are perfectly curated sanctuaries. The bathrooms are stocked with Blank products, and the 'Hox Shop' in the lobby replaces the overpriced minibar with snacks at street prices. It’s a small touch of respect for the guest’s wallet that goes a long way.

Then there’s the food. In a city where you can’t throw a rock without hitting a tapas bar, The Hoxton went in a different direction. Downstairs, Four Corners serves Detroit-style deep-dish pizza. It sounds like a crime against Catalan culture until you taste the crispy, cheesy crust. It’s thick, it’s square, and it’s glorious. Upstairs, the rooftop Taqueria, Tope, serves tacos and frozen margaritas with a view that will make you forget your own name. You’re staring directly at the Torre Glòries—Jean Nouvel’s giant, glowing cigar—and the spires of the Sagrada Familia in the distance. It’s one of the best rooftop bars in Barcelona, and it’s usually packed with people who look much cooler than you feel.

Is it perfect? No. The service can be 'relaxed' to the point of frustration when the rooftop gets busy. The neighborhood, while booming, still has pockets of industrial wasteland that might spook the uninitiated. And if you want to be within stumbling distance of the Rambla, you’re going to be spending a lot of time on the L1 metro line. But that’s the draw. Poblenou is where Barcelona is actually happening right now. It’s where the old workshops are becoming galleries and the best craft breweries are hiding. The Hoxton is your basecamp for that exploration. It’s stylish, it’s honest, and it’s got better pizza than any hotel has a right to have. If you can handle a little noise and a lot of personality, this is where you stay.
